In order to get to know everyone on here a little bit better I thought I would start a Topic that would allow members to share the story that led to them adding a Great Dane to thier family.
In my case it was several things... I grew up in a small town in MI. and I can say that I never even seen a Great Dane in person unitl I moved to Saginaw MI. When one day on my way home from work I saw this white dog with black spots giving his owner a walk. Not knowing anything about Danes I thought I just saw the worlds biggest dalmation, lol. As soon as I got home I went on line and googled it, thus finding out what I had seen was a Harlequin Great Dane. That is when it started, my wife in I could not get enough we went to book stores to get books about Danes, we searched online for anything about them, we tried to learn as much as we could. After much reading and picture browsing we thought that the Great Dane was for us. Shortly after that we moved to Terre Haute IN. and while waiting for our new store to be built my wife got a part time job at Petco in the Grooming Dept. One day she called me and asked if I could come to her work because she had something to show me, as I walked in there he was a full grown Balck Great Dane. This was the first time that I had ever seen one face to face. I fell in love and told my wife that we needed one. Not long after that we brought Sophie into our family. Due to the length of that story now when anyone asks me why I have such a large dog I tell them it is because I am 6'6" and I wanted a dog that I could pet without bending over...

That's great story C...my story is on the home page but I'll tell it again...I grew up as an Army Brat, so all I ever knew were German and Belgian Shepherds, with the occasional pointer or setter...20 years ago my husband and I went on a fishing trip and we stopped for bait at this little hole in the wall and there in the back of a pick up truck, waiting patiently for his human to return was a big black great dane...now I can NOT pass up a chance to pet any dog but he really drew me in...my husband, remembering a child hood friend who had one mentioned in passing that some day he'd like to have a great dane...well you know I had to find one for the man I love...LOL...that was Jake, who became my passion, I loved everything about him, he was a big old mantle merle out of Meistersinger lines...now my husband is careful what he wishes for, we've had a herd of them ever since...

never thought I'd be owned by danes in my life. I always wanted dog but my asthma kept me from having any animals around. I used to start asthma when I got around dogs but not anymore!!! one day last year, my in law told me that family he build cabinets is giving puppies away and it a Great Dane puppies. Never seen dane except in pictures, I went to see them. I didnt give my hubby a chance to say no. I pick the one I want and brought him back few weeks later when he was ready. Since than, Im a huge dane fun
Anyways, if Im going to get more dogs, it will be danes, not another breed. I love having XL dogs sleeping with me at night lol
