This email was sent to me privately by someone who read that you needed help getting your dog to let you know when he has to go out...sounds like it would work really well... Hi, Nancy.
I was looking at your site & saw the lady who asked about having her boy "speak" to go pee -- I have a bell on my door.
To teach her to ring it:
When we were headed outside, I stopped at the door & told her
to "ring your bell". I might ring it myself once or twice to make it
look fun, or hold her paw up & ring it the first couple times. Then
I would just stand there & wait...
As soon as she did ANYTHING (by herself) that made it ding (even a little) I immediately opened the door and we went outside.
Every time we went out (which happens many times a day, running
errands & stuff) I said, "ring your bell" and waited until she
nosed or pawed it -- after about 5 times, she had it down. Since she
LOVES outside, it was a no-brainer.
As I was writing this, my friend's Greyhound (who I'm watching
this evening) just rang the bell & I took him out for his potty
break! He learned just from watching my dog & his cats (who use a
bell to come INSIDE when they've been out). So it's easy!
Feel free to post this for your reader :-)
P.S. If I am busy and ignore Vanna's "ding" a few times... She
goes "WHACK" with her paw and makes a super loud "BONG" so I am forced
to get up. Haha :-) The sound really carrys. I just have a small bell,
about 1.5" across? hung on the doorknob.

I took Duke outside every 2 hours for almost week and half even at night. If he whines, I took him outside. It was really easy for me. Now, when he whine, I know he have to go. If I dont get up, he comes and take my hands off from keyborad that I need to open the door for him LOL Dutchess wont give me any notice so Im taking her everytime she start sniffing. Good thing Im a staying at home wife LOL
